Dunedin tour attractions don’t get much more relaxing than a gentle stroll around our authentic Dunedin Chinese Garden. Learn what to expect during your sightseeing adventure, perfect for locals and tourists alike!
Things to do in Dunedin don’t all need to be fast paced, allowing time for slowing down and relaxing while visiting Dunedin attractions can be extremely rewarding. The Chinese Garden was originally fabricated in our sister city of Shanghai then reassembled (using no nails) here in Dunedin, by a special team of artisan builders from China.
Outside of China, our garden is one of only 2 authentic Chinese Gardens in the world.
You might be wondering why we have a Chinese Garden? The answer lies with the Chinese immigrants who came seeking their fortune during the Gold Rush of the 1860’s, and then decided to stay and make Dunedin their home.
If you visit do not expect thrills and excitement, this is more a place for inner reflection and quiet contemplation, where, water and plants provide a peaceful escape from the day and its stresses.
My last visit to the Chinese garden was during the Moon Festival. It was a lovely occasion with musical performances and dance, and many had dressed in traditional attire.
Maybe you have just come up from Queenstown where you have bungy jumped or been jet boat riding. That type of fun is pure adrenaline. So, then maybe the Chinese garden is exactly what you need to unwind, just chill out for a bit, before resuming your list of things to see in Dunedin.
As far as Dunedin attractions go, the Chinese Garden provides an almost unique experience and should at least be on your shortlist for an hour relaxing in Dunedin, sipping on a nice cuppa.
